BEMIDJI– The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the officers involved in the shooting death of a Red Lake man late Wednesday night.
The BCA says Bemidji Police Officer Bidal Duran and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Newhouse were involved with the fatal incident. Duran has been with the BPD for nearly six years, and Newhouse has been with the BCSO for two years.
During a traffic stop at the Ridgeway Avenue and 30th Street NW intersection, Officer Duran confirmed a rear-seat passenger, Vernon May, 34, of Red Lake, had a felony warrant. When asked to exit the vehicle, May appeared to be in possession of a handgun. A struggle ensued for control of the weapon, and both Deputy Newhouse and Officer Duran shot and struck May. Paramedics arrived on scene and confirmed May was dead.
Duran and Newhouse have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. A handgun was recovered at the scene, and Duran was wearing a bodycam, according to an initial release.
May had a felony warrant for fifth degree drug possession, issued in mid-November after a failed court appearance.
