BEMIDJI– A 54-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her 34-year-old son on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation, according to an updated release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the release, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at around 8 p.m., deputies responded to a report of an out-of-control individual outside the Big Winnie Bar in Bena. Deputies arrived and learned that Thomas Matthews, 34, of Bena, was being restrained by several people after attacking and assaulting several patrons at the bar.
Deputies responded to a Bena residence early in the morning Wednesday, Nov. 28, to a report of an unresponsive woman. Paramedics determined the woman, Joy Matthews, 54, of Bena, was dead shortly after arrival, and cause of death appears to be multiple stab wounds.
Matthews is currently in custody on pending formal charges of assault for the Nov. 27 incident and homicide for the incident on Nov. 28.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case with the assistance of the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
