BEMIDJI MN – On Monday, July 9, at approximately 8:20 AM Beltrami County Deputies and the Minnesota state patrol responded to a report of an overturned ATV in Eckles Township approximately 9 miles Northwest of Bemidji. When they arrived it was determined that the adult female operator was deceased at the scene. Deputies identified the operator of the ATV as Rosalee Miles, age 42 of Shevlin, MN. The investigation of the crash revealed that the ATV Miles was operating was traveling north on Nature road when the vehicle left the roadway entered the ditch, struck a barb wire fence, and then overturned in the field adjacent to the roadway. Miles was not wearing a helmet. The crash is pending further investigation with the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and Beltrami County Coroner’s Office. Assisting at the scene was the Minnesota State Patrol, Bemidji Ambulance Service, and North Country First Responders.

WHITE EARTH MN – Leonard “Alan” Roy was sworn in as the new White Earth Reservation Secretary-Treasurer during an outdoor ceremony held at the White Earth Reservation Business Committee headquarters yesterday. Roy defeated incumbent Tara Mason in the White Earth Reservation General Election held June 12. After being sworn in, Roy stated the White Earth Reservation Business Committee (RBC) is a government in transition and key leadership positions, including the executive director, will be filled in the next several months. Roy encouraged White Earth tribal members to apply for these leadership positions as the jobs are posted.

RED LAKE FALLS MN – A Red Lake Falls woman accused in the death of an infant in her care is scheduled to appear in court today. Thirty-year-old Sarah Kortan is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of her two-month-old niece in late June.  Kortan called 9-1-1 June 20th to report the infant was not breathing.  Deputies and first responders started C-P-R and the child was taken to Thief River Falls before being airlifted to a Fargo hospital.  The child was removed from life support two days later and died.  The complaint says Kortan admitted to dropping the child and that she hit her head on the stove and floor.  The autopsy revealed the child had skull fractures and eye injuries consistent with being shaken.  The girl’s mother is in the Shakopee women’s prison on drug charges and Kortan is her cousin.  She could face a 40-year sentence if convicted.

BEMIDJI MN – The Transfer Station main self-haul lanes will be closed today, due to construction.  Residents will not be able to drop off:  Appliances, Construction Debris, Furniture, Batteries, House Hold Hazardous Waste, Electronics, or Non-Burnable Items. Residents can use the BY-PASS Lane to drop off Household Garbage and Recycling Containers today. There is a Waste Pesticide collection scheduled for today from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Blackduck Coop Ag Services.
