BEMIDJI MN – Bemidji Fire Department responded to a report of a detached garage residential fire early Saturday morning. The fire, which was reported at 12:16 am, was located on the 1100 block of Augusta Dr NE. Upon arrival, Bemidji Firefighters encountered a fully involved detached garage as well as heavy fire on the exterior of the adjacent home. 14 firefighters used three fire engines, three tenders and a squad on scene. One civilian injury was reported. The fire department was on scene for approximately 5 hours. The fire caused extensive damage to the main floor and attic of the home. The detached garage was a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Bemidji Fire Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office; however it does not appear to be suspicious in nature. The fire department was assisted at the scene by the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, Beltrami Electric, and the Bemidji Ambulance Service.

ST. PAUL MN – Minnesota farmers affected by the recent flooding can take advantage of a zero-percent Disaster Loan Program offered by the Minnesota Rural Finance Authority (RFA). The program helps farmers cover flood clean-up, repair, and replacement costs not covered by insurance. Severe summer storms have caused significant flooding and damage to farm property in the Red Lake Nation and 36 counties including Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Polk, and Red Lake. As with other RFA loans, the Disaster Loan program will be available for farmers through their existing agricultural lenders for financing for these repairs. The RFA participation is limited to 45 percent of the principal amount up to a maximum of $200,000. RED LAKE FALLS MN – A Red Lake Falls woman who was caring for an infant in her home is accused of killing the two-month-old child.  Sarah Kortan is charged with murder in connection with last month’s death of the baby named Josephine.  An autopsy revealed that the infant had multiple skull fractures and severe eye injuries consistent with being shaken.  Kortan is behind bars held without bail and is expected back in court on Wednesday.

MAHNOMEN MN – On July 8th at about 11:15 PM. Mahnomen County Sheriff’s office received a call from Mahnomen Health Center reporting a male victim came in with burns and had been assaulted. According to the statement from the victim, Brain Smith, 28 of Mahnomen, three males came into his garage, assaulted him and took his Ford F150 pickup truck. At about 9:15 AM on July 9th Deputies received a report that the pickup had been found burned on a snowmobile trail on the Mahnomen/Clearwater County line. The Case is under investigation by the White Earth Police Department and the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office.
