BEMIDJI MN – The Secretary of States Office recently announced the candidate’s filings for local office. Republican Matt Grossell is the incumbent in the race for State District 2A and Michael Northbird is the Democratic challenger. For State District 2B Steve Green the republican incumbent and Karen Braden is the Democratic newcomer. In the State House District 5A Democrat John Persell will challenge Republican Matt Bliss. Republican Sandy Layman will face Democrat Pat Medure in District 5B. Heather Broda, Craig Gaasvig, and Natalie Grosfield all filed for Beltrami County Commissioner District 1. Richard Anderson is unopposed for District 3 as is Ernie Beitel for County Sheriff. In city of Bemidji filings Joe Vene is challenging incumbent Rita Albrect for mayor. For the Councilman At Large Don Heinonen, Lawrence Hanenberger and Jim Thompson have all filed. In Ward 4 Linda Lemmer and Emelie Rivera are challenging incumbent Richard Lehmann. Two candidates are in the running for ward 2, Jamie Thibodeaux and Michael Beard. The time period to file for election and reelection ended on Tuesday.
Gov. Mark Dayton is encouraging Minnesotans to get out and enjoy the state’s outstanding outdoor opportunities by proclaiming June 2018 as Great Outdoors Month. The proclamation cites the mental and physical benefits of spending time outdoors as one incentive to visit Minnesota state parks and trails. As an added incentive, the DNR will continue its longstanding tradition of waiving the requirement for a vehicle permit and provide free admission at all 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas on Saturday, June 9, which is National Get Outdoors Day, an event held annually on the second Saturday in June. Many special programs will take place throughout Great Outdoors Month and on National Get Outdoors Day to help make each visit memorable and fun for visitors, For a complete list of statewide programs, with times and locations, visit the DNRs website.
HIBBING MN – A man is dead after a crash in Hibbing on Thursday. Curtis Leppa, 65, of Hibbing was traveling eastbound on HWY 37 when his pickup crossed the centerline into westbound traffic, when he collided head-on with a semi. Leppa was not wearing his seatbelt according to the state patrol. The driver of the semi, Timothy Christianson sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated at UMCM. Christianson was wearing his seatbelt and alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.
MINNEAPOLIS MN – The names of two young Minnesota children who died last week in accidental drowning’s have been released. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office says three-year-old Nolan James Muonio died at Children’s Hospital Sunday, two days after being pulled from a pool near Montrose in Wright County. Officials say two-year-old Sawyer Howe of Minneapolis had to be rescued from Rush Lake in Crow Wing County on Memorial Day and passed away in the hospital Saturday. The drowning’s are still under investigation. A young girl from Edina was found in the deep end of a pool Saturday and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
